Baxter State Men’s Parka is a great coat for cool and damp weather, but not for temperatures below 28 degrees. I was impressed that it repelled rain and with the hood was great for walking the dog or shoveling snow, etc. In the wind and below 28 degrees, it required a sweater and turtleneck to provide adequate warmth.

My son loves his new parka. He was wearing the Rugged Ridge Parka, whicn is also awesome, and swapped it out for the Baxter State Parka. He wears it everyday. Especially loves it in the rain. It’s warm without being heavy and bulky.

I am glad to see this reissue. I bought my first “Mountain Parka” in 1981, and it was one of the most versatile winter coats I have ever owned. The only downside was no insulation below the waist or in the sleeves. There is now insulation below the waist and in the sleeves. This is a great winter jacket.

I had one in the 80’s and just loved it. I was thrilled when you brought it back and it is even better than before. Fits a wide range of temps and with layers is perfect for almost anything!

Perfect jacket for brisk cold days, mildly cold days or rainy cold days. The warmth, comfort and water resistance this jacket provides is quite unexpected! In a good way! This is the ‘go-to-jacket’ for just about every cool, cold or rainy cold day.

Simply one great jacket! Comfortable and warm down to 0. Good zipper and a hood that actually keeps your head warm. Our Golden Retriever loves a stroll in the cold weather, especially if it’s also snowing! With this jacket, you’ll enjoy it too.

It’s comfortable and practical especially for those who need to carry things in the 4 usable pockets. I’m old so I needed to use a vest when it was in the thirties in degrees. I used a layer with sleeves when it was freezing.

Overall a nice jacket. Sizing must have shifted – compared to other LLBean jackets and shirts – L is the new XL. Sleeves are a tiny bit short. Wool is nice but a bit itchy.

Just bought this and I think this jacket should be warm enough for San Francisco winters with just a tshirt under. I bought the green color and love the contrasting red plaid wool lining. However, the wool is really itchy. I’m sure with a thicker layer you wouldn’t feel it but with just a tshirt on it is quite uncomfortable. I’m hoping that it either goes away eventually, or my skin gets used to the itchy material. The wool is thin but does provide some heat retention properties though so it’s definitely effective.

Full disclosure: I ended up returning the Baxter and going with the Mountain Classic, but not because the Baxter was a bad coat at all.
I’ve read most of the reviews of the Mountain Classic and the Baxter ’82 and tried both of them. Each jacket has its merits, those that want a heavier jacket should get the Baxter, I needed a good light hooded jacket and ended up choosing the Mountain Classic. It’s perfect for what it is: a light nylon jacket, with a well fitting hood, great pockets, that’s pretty darn close to waterproof (just wore it outside in a torrential downpour and I can still see the rain beaded up on the hood). The fabric of the Mountain Classic is kind of crinkly, sure, it’s nylon. But that also means it’s not very heavy, not much more than a shell, but keeps me dry. The poly fabric inside the back and hood won’t keep you warm below 40-50 degrees by itself; it is not wool, but unlike real wool, it’s also really soft.
Based on other people’s reviews of the Mountain Classic, tried the Baxter ’82 as well, and the Baxter is by far the better coat (despite what some other reviewers of the Baxter ’82 have said). It’s very well made, from the real wool hood lining to the 3M thinsulate lining the arms and lower half, the shell is some twill/poly blend, so it feels nicer to the hand compared the nylon of the MC. It’s a very warm jacket, maybe not warm enough for some, or “as warm as the original from 1982,” but I thought it was more than warm enough. I could probably layer well and wear the Baxter throughout an NYC winter. The one complaint I have is that the wool is really scratchy. I mean, it should be, it’s real wool, because it’s a solid jacket. But I’m ultimately returning the Baxter and keeping the Mountain Classic.
In and out of public transit, what I needed was something that could act as a shell and keep me dry through a rainy fall evening that’s also 64 degrees without overheating. When it gets colder, adding layers under the Mountain Classic will probably get me well into early winter. At which point I’ll wish I had kept the Baxter as well. But for my location and the time of year, the Mountain Classic is perfect. Maybe I’ll get the Baxter ’82 next year.

I love this parka. It’s the perfect coat for the period between light jackets and heavy coats. Late fall and early spring.

I bought it for my son. He loves it! I think it’s too short. He’s 6ft tall.

I love this coat! I had one of the _ORIGINAL_ Original Baxter State Parkas and completely wore it out a few years ago. At the time, I was disappointed to find that what L.L. Bean was then calling the Baxter State Parka was a completely different coat. (Why did you do that, LL? Give the different coat a different name, please!). So I was thrilled to learn a few weeks ago that the Original Baxter State Parka is back! It seems to be an exact recreation of the original – same patch pockets, hood, slightly itchy wool lining – except that the current blue is lighter in shade than the original navy blue, so I got the green one instead, and I love it. (Some of that may still be nostalgia for the ORIGINAL, but still, I say, way to go L.L. Bean!)

Believe it or not, I’m still wearing my 1984 original! I’ve taken care of it and it still looks and functions beautifully. Took a vacation from it for a few years, wearing the then- latest parka at the time, but have come back to my green favorite that is every bit as warm as the new-fangled ones, plus it gets a lot of attention!

I bought this coat at the Lone Tree, Colorado store. I needed to try it for size. I usually take a women’s medium size. However, the colors offered for women were not appealing. The men’s small fit well. The colors offered are superior to the ones offered to women. The pockets are even bigger. I love this coat! It is great for walking our dogs in 35-45 degree weather!

My ’82 uninsulated/nylon lined version of this parka has worn out and I decided to replace it with this remake. Unfortunately, the uninsulated/lined version was not part of the remake and I decided to try the current remake version. Just received it via UPS. It fits well and would rather it were uninsulated/lined so I could adjust insulation levels with other garments (i.e.- vest, down sweater, fleece jacket, etc.). The most disappointing thing about this jacket parka is the placement of the adjustable waist drawstring. I don’t know how folks from Maine are built, but my waist is somewhere near my navel and not 10 inches above. The drawstring is placed way too high up in the parka. It looks nice as a dividing line between the red/black plaid insulation in the upper part of the parka and the quilted lining in the lower part of the parka, but really serves no useful purpose in that location. This could have been better designed in that aspect.

My husband loves this coat. It fits true to size and is just the right weight for cool fall and spring weather when his Rugged Ridge Parka is too warm.

I have loved the Baxter State parka since the ’70s, if memory serves. It is getting hard to keep all the details in my mind as I look back. The perfect light parka – keeps out the rain with enough warmth for Texas winters with a few exceptions and then I just layer up with a sweater underneath. I was terribly unhappy when it was no longer available. I had worn my third one out and didn’t think to send it back for repairs since it was so affordable and easy to get. Thanks for bringing it back!
Norman –
Good coat. Like fit and features.
Do need a heavier shirt or sweater etc., as can feel some cold at shoulders across the back. Advertised that that needed. I’m happy with purchase.

Very glad to see the Baxter back in the lineup. 55 yrs ago we called these 60/40 parkas and were a mainstay with a down vest or jacket underneath. Can’t beat the versatility then and just as good now. Great for everyday wear as well as snowshoeing , skiing, shooting and hunting.
Computer V –
Not as warm as described and the wool liner can be very irritating.

Beautiful item. Great quality and fit. Great customer support and fast shipping.

Beautiful jacket well-made just what I was looking for but the sleeves were a bit long and the body a bit tight for this 77-year-old gentleman
